Argh, I fixed this by turning off my 5ghz wifi again. SofaBaton, this is ridiculous in the age of mesh Wifi systems that use a single SSID for so frequencies!

I found the only way I could get my hub to update, even on an iPhone, was to disable my 5ghz wifi to force everything onto the 2.4ghz band. After that the hub updated. However I still can’t get the remote itself to update, it fails with a 1001 error.
