I wound up buying an inexpensive HDMI switch, and it works MUCH better than trying to sequence the TV inputs. Everything is a 1:1 command for sourcing, and it also expands my sources to 5. I tried two different brands, and they both work fine. OK. I solved the problem. I just had to do a forced sync. Originally it synced automatically, so I didn't think about it, but after watching some youtube video reviews, I saw that one of them recommended manually syncing after any changes. I'd still be interested in knowing how the various pieces communicate with each other, though.

Amazon replaced the remote. The new one worked fine for a couple weeks, but now is acting up. This is much different than the original problem, which was a completely dead remote. This time the remote does not seem to be synched with the hub properly, but was working fine. The hub works fine with the iphone app.
