Short-press Infrared support?

I have two devices here which I'd like to add but their remotes don't do "long presses".  Basically, when I press a button a long time, it likely only sends a very short infrared signal and the hub detects this and blinks briefly and then says on the app "could not learn".  Is there some workaround/trick to get the hub to detect and learn short-button (infrared signal) presses?
