Best practice setup for unified remote

Like most here I want to control a combined system - Onkyo AVR,  Epson Projector, Streaming(Roku & DirecTV), DVD.

So the projector & AVR are always to be controlled in the same way on the same keys - what changes is the input.

So the question is how to set up the macros for a unified "one remote". E.g. set the U1 to "Roku" and it should turn on the Roku, Projector, AVR, and set the input of the AVR. The volume should control the AVR and some of the projector controls should be active - this would be the same for all inputs.

If I load each of these devices I see how to use them. But if, for example, I want the "on" button of "DVD" to also turn on the AVR and Projector - I can't because that macro would replace the "on" for DVD, etc.

The only way I can think of is to create "fake" devices that combine the keys of the real but hidden devices, but that seems like a very clumsy way.

Also, if the system is already on - I would just want to change inputs and, perhaps, just turn on the one device and select the input. The Epson projector, DVR and DirecTV-stream also have separate on/off codes - but there is no obvious off button.

So, I'm looking for advice - how to best set up unified remotes with the U1?
