unable to scroll through the menu

Once the remote is awaken I am able to use the scroll wheel to select one of the three menu options [Activities,Devices,Set] Once I select one of these I am unable to scroll through any of the sub menus. For example if I select Set it brings up the Set submenu but I am not able to scroll down or select the top menu option Sync. It just goes black and sends me back to the main Menu.
