U2 problems

I'm posting U2-related stuff here, since there is no separate U2 forum.  My problems started right away after installing the batteries.  The keys were not backlit, so I thought, maybe there is a setting you can acces after pairing to turn the backlight on.  However, I didn't find such a setting, even though it paired just fine.  I continued with setting up the remote thinking that after my devices are set up, the keys would light up, but I couldn't even get that far.  When I tried to set up my Sony mini-LED TV (XR85-X95L), I did not find it in the database.  The closest one I could find was last year's model (X95K), so I decided to try that one.  I went through the set up process, selected my icon, and pressed "Complete".  The database started to download, but at around the 20% completion, I got this error message: "Exception occurred during device creation.  Please try again."  I tried again, but got the same error message.  Then I tried setting up my CATV box twice, and got same error message.  My last attempt was my Sony Blu-ray player, but again, got the same error message.  To summarize, my remote has no backlighting and cannot download any codes from your database.  Did I just buy a defective unit?
