X1 - Can not control Directv HR44-500 set top box

I can find the HR44-500 STB in the devices menu but none of the commands work to control the STB.  I set the Directv box to IR control and it still does not work.  I see via search of this forum that I am not the only one with this problem.  Thank goodness I ordered via Amazon to return this device if I can not find a solution.
